Carbon High School football coach Phil Howa has resigned after four seasons at the helm, it was announced last week.
“It was my choice to step away from the program,” said Howa. “I’m the luckiest guy in the world to have had the opportunity to work with kids who have given me as much as I hope to have given them.”
Howa and the Dinos wrapped up the 2023 season with a loss to the Grantsville Cowboys in the opening round of the 3A State Tournament on Oct. 20. The loss gave Carbon a 1-10 record this past campaign.
Prior to taking over the Carbon football program, Howa served as the head coach of the Helper Rams for 28 season. One of the longest tenured coaches in the history of athletics in Carbon County, Howa has spent 44 years total working with youth locally.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better group of kids to coach at Carbon over the past four seasons,” said Howa. “I am not erasing my time with kids from my schedule. I have already told each of them that I will continue to be there for them now and my door will always be open in the future.”
After graduating from Carbon High School in 1976, Howa furthered his education at Southern Utah University. Upon graduating in 1980, he returned to Carbon High School and served as an assistant coach through 1984.
Howa received his first head coaching position at East Carbon High School in 1985. He then moved on to the College of Eastern Utah where he worked as an assistant for one season. In 1991 Howa became the head coach at Helper and held that position until accepting the Carbon job in March of 2020.
Carbon High School will look to fill the head coaching vacancy immediately. The job is currently open for those interested and more information can be found HERE.
