This week’s Carbon School District update shines a spotlight on Castle Heights Elementary and Principal, Wendy Fluckey took time to speak over the telephone with Castle Country Radio to discuss completion of Red Ribbon week, reflection competition, spelling bee contest and end of the year testing.
The school recently held their Red Ribbon event and the students enjoyed all of the activities put on during the week. “Our PTA did a great job of doing things each day, bringing healthy choices to kids and then bringing in some of their community members just to support the Red Ribbon week, but it went well, it was a great week,” said Principal Fluckey. Red Ribbon week is a campaign that highlights the importance of living a drug-free life and during the week students participate in daily themed events.
The school is preparing for their Reflections competition that has a lot of the students participating in this year. “So next week we’re actually going to be having our awards ceremony. We ended up with 67 participants and we had the most entries out of all the schools in the region, so very exciting, the theme is I have hope because. We actually have so many kids participating, we are going to have two awards ceremonies. We’ll have one for third, fourth and fifth grade and the second one for kindergarten through second grade,” said Principal Fluckey. School officials were very pleased with the participation that went on and are looking forward to reading the Reflection submissions.
The student body have been prepping for the school’s upcoming Spelling Bee contest. “We’re starting off with classroom competition so on the 14th our fourth graders will do the class competitions to get the finalists. Then on the 21st will be our fifth graders doing the competition to see which of those students will qualify. Then we will hold our Spelling Bee in December just before we dismiss for Christmas Break,” said Principal Fluckey. Then when students return from the break, those that qualified, will compete in a district wide competition before heading to regionals.
Its hard to believe but when students return from the Thanksgiving Break, they will have a week of instruction before beginning mid-year testing. “Starting in December we’re going to start our mid-year testing, I’m very excited to see where testing comes out with. Our beginning of the year testing I was really excited to see, especially our reading scores, the highest ever for the beginning of the year. I think we’re on the right path, and each year we just see continual growth and continual improvements, so we’re doing a lot of things right here,” stated Principal Fluckey.
