Helper Middle School is being highlighted on this week’s Carbon School District weekly update and Castle Country Radio was able to speak with Student Government Advisor, Mrs. Alisa Black about what is taking place at the school.

At the school this year there is a huge emphasis on building the school’s culture. “We are focusing on building connections with students. We want to know every single student in our school by name and by need. It’s been awesome, we’ve made groups of families, each teacher is in charge of 12 to 13 students that we call our families, and we do competitions throughout the year, it helps us to build connections with our kids. Like I said we want to know every single student by name and need,” said Mrs. Black. This has brought the relationships between students, faculty and staff closer.

The fall sports have started for the school as Student Body Historian, Jude Breneman explains, “Well we got wrestling going on right now, we got a match on Thursday, and it’s going great for everybody, everybody is excited for that – got Canyon View coming up. We got basketball they’re starting that in January; I believe.” You can see a schedule of upcoming games by visiting the school’s Facebook page.

The student government has implemented a program at the school this year that no one sits alone at lunch. “So Helper is really into being kind and being generous to others. We love having a good community and always just staying together and being a family. So our Student Government and a lot of kids at our school are doing a program that nobody sits a lot at lunch. We don’t want anybody to feel left out. We don’t want anybody to feel alone. We want everyone to just feel welcomed and happy and want to go to school,” said Student Body President, Olivia Rondenelli. This program has taught the students how to show compassion for one another.

Currently, the students are hosting a food drive competition between “families” and it ends on Friday. “So with the food drive we do it in our little family groups and the teachers will just have a box in their room, and then the family who gets the most food by the end of this week, wins a root beer float party actually, and everybody is really excited for it and I think its going to go great,” said Student Body Vice President, Kianna Ori. The students will donate the food from the food drive to Marsha’s’ Kitchen in Helper.
