The Emery Spartan basketball team got started on the road Tuesday in Herriman to meet up with the Providence Hall Patriots. After a defensive first quarter from the Spartans, things evened out the rest of the way, but in the end, it was Emery on top 54-49.
The Spartans ended last season with a 17-6 record overall which included a 7-1 Region 12 crown. Entering into the State Championships at the No. 4 seed, making it all the way to the quarterfinals, falling to Summit Academy.
Emery came out quickly in the first quarter against Providence Hall, holding the Patriots to five points and putting up eleven. In the second, the Spartans turned up the offensive intensity, but the Patriots did as well, cutting into the Emery lead, with the Spartans still holding a 30-21 lead at halftime.
Providence Hall came out in the third, putting up 16 and holding the Spartans to 13, pulling within six, 43-37. In the final quarter, the Patriots kept pushing but Emery pushed right back holding on to take the 54-49 win.
Wade Stilson led all scorers with 15 in the contest, adding 17 rebounds and four assists. Luke Justice added 12 and Zack Tuttle scored 11 with six rebounds and four steals.
The Spartans will hold their home opener on Wednesday when South Summit comes to the Spartan Center.
Game time is set for 7 p.m..
