Creekview Elementary was highlighted on this week’s Carbon School District weekly update so Second Grade Teacher, Elaine Taylor stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss what’s been taking place at the school.

The school have been working hard with students on their reading skills by implementing a new program this year. “We’ve tried something new with our Intervention Program, helping all students to get on reading level. So in one hour’s time we run 66 interventions and we are utilizing every member of our faculty to give kids what they need in their reading to hopefully get all students on level,” said Mrs. Taylor. This designated reading time is called W.I.N. Time which stands for Whatever I Need. The school has seen great improvement among students since applying this new concept.

The fifth-grade students have been preparing for the Constitution Bee which means they have been learning everything there is to know about the Constitution of the United States. “This is a great opportunity for fifth-graders to learn about our Constitution. They are given a copy of the Constitution to study it, read it, really get in depth with it and then they answer questions from it. It can be as detailed as like, name three guarantee rights from a certain amendment, and they have to be able to recall that information. So pretty intense,” explained Mrs. Taylor. Students will then go on to compete in the Constitution Bee at both school and district levels.

The school’s PTA has established another Santa’s Workshop for students to do some Christmas shopping. “We call it Santa’s Workshop so students get to choose one family member to give a gift to. Because in a world where we often want, want, want, we want to give the students an opportunity to give and to think of others. They get to choose one family member that they can give to, and then they have a menu of options that they can shop from, and buy their family member a gift. They buy this with a homemade card, so that is their payment,” said Mrs. Taylor.  The students can wrap their gifts before going home and this is a great way for them to feel and understand what it’s like to give to others.
