Bradon Rushton will be the next head coach of the Carbon High School football program, it was announced by athletic director Ted Bianco.

“I attended USU Eastern for my associate degree a number of years back and I really loved the Price and Carbon area,” said Rushton. “I thought it would be a good fit to go back to that area and so I’m extremely excited to get going.”

Rushton, 26, will take over the program after former head coach Phil Howa resigned following the 2023 season. With five years of experience under his belt as an assistant coach, the 2024 season will be his first as a head coach.

Rushton’s first coaching job came back in 2019 as the defensive backs coach for Payson High School. The following season he took over the defensive coordinator role for the program’s junior varsity. In 2021 he made the jump back to the varsity level and took over as the running backs coach. Rushton then became the defensive analyst for his final season at Payson in 2022.

After four years at Payson High School, Rushton transitioned to the college ranks this past season as he became the wide receivers coach for Southern Virginia University, a NCAA Division III program in Buena Vista, Virginia.

“When I went to Southern Virginia University, I had the opportunity to work with Coach (Joe) Dupaix, who was the receivers coach at Navy with Ken Niumatalol,” said Rushton. “So that was a great opportunity to work with several great coaches.”

A graduate of Newcastle High School in Wyoming, Rushton will graduate with his bachelor’s degree in May from Utah Valley University in Orem.

The next plan for Rushton is to assemble an assistant coaching staff and then begin preparation for the team’s off-season workout plan. He also plans to put a heavy focus on his team’s mental aspect, as well as teamwork ahead of the 2024 campaign.

“Energy is contagious, both positive and negative, so we will have to have positive energy. And teamwork. This is the ultimate team game. Each of one of us have a specific role and if we are all working together with high energy, great things can happen.”
