The Carbon School District update took time to shine its weekly spotlight on Sally Mauro Elementary in Helper. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with a few members from the faculty to find out about the school’s Thanksgiving food drive, monthly character lessons and how to prepare your student for testing.
The entire student body participated in a Thanksgiving food drive prior to the holiday as Fifth Grade Teacher, Camille Carmack explains, “We had our students go around to each classroom every day to get the food that each class brought and they counted the items. We had a contest; the fifth grade won the contest so they get to do something fun with Mr. Allen at some point. All together we gathered about 750 items that we took to Marsha’s Food Pantry in Helper and they were very appreciative of that.” The students were happy to give back to their community during the Thanksgiving holiday.
Another fun activity the Student Government hosts is monthly character lessons for all grades at the school as First Grade Teacher, Kailee Pendegrass explains, “In October they did a drug-free lesson, and then last month in November they did a gratitude lesson and they just teach it to all the grades. There’s usually a book that they read, they do a video, we learned a song, they do an art activity, and so that’s really fun for the Student Government to do that.” The next activity that the school’s student government will be hosting is their annual Candy Cane Sale. Funds earned from the candy cane sales helps send the Student Government Officers to leadership conferences.
Mid-year testing is coming up and parents must make sure their students are prepared. This can be as simple as ensuring the student gets enough rest the night before and eats a good hardy breakfast the morning of. Instructional Coach, Kristine Anderson states that just reading with your student will help too, as she explains, “Reading at home of course is number one, so just sitting down and reading with your child, making sure they’re being accurate with the reading, asking them comprehension questions, things like that, that’s a big deal. Then also practicing anything grade level wise for math is very helpful too.” Attendance on testing days is very important so parents please make sure your student attends school on these days.
