The USU Extension is excited to be hosting a Castle Country Gardening Course set to begin on Jan. 17 and this is a great series of introductory level gardening classes to help growers be successful in their gardens. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Extension Assistant Professors, Steven Price and Rowe Zwahlen to get all the details.

“I think this is our third year doing it and really, the reason we started it, is to kind of bridge the gap between from some of the one-off course that we do and our Master Gardener series, which is really in depth. We knew that there were people around that wanted kind of more introductory level information or even kind of weird information or information that we’re not typically going to cover in depth in the Master Gardeners course,” stated Price. A lot of the information shared during the course is what many residents have inquired about through the extension office.

The Castle Country Gardening Course will offer the following:

Jan. 17         Seed Starting
Feb. 7          Successful Gardening in Castle Country Soils
Mar. 20        Irrigation Design for Low-water Landscapes
Apr. 17         Growing Grapes & Berries
May.15         Vegetable Transplanting & Care

The soils course is sure to bring some good information to gardeners, as Zwahlen explains, “We’re going to do a section on Castle Country soils, which are unique and a little bit of a challenge. We’re going to spend some time dealing with how you can overcome some of our challenges here.” That’s the great thing about these classes is all the tips/tricks shared with participants have to do with our area.

The classes will take place at the USU Eastern Campus inside the Reeves Building Room 187 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. The cost to attend the course is $5.00 per class or $20.00 for the entire series. “They can sign up on https://www.eventbrite.com/ you can check that out or you can give us a call at one of our offices,” said Zwahlen.
