It is time once again to sit down with Carbon County Commissioner Larry Jensen to discuss what is taking place in the county. He was eager to talk about Ridge Road sewer project and what is happening at the airport.
During the COVID years the county received money to help with the community and a portion of those funds were to help with the sewer project on Ridge Road. “Part of what we were allowed to use that money for was some of these types of things that would help the community, for example, water sewer projects. So there’s an area on Ridge Road that Wellington City had a small sewer line that ran into, but industry would not have the capacity to get into that system. So we took $1.8 million of our COVID money and installed a very long sewer line from the Price River, all the way up to Ridge Road, near Komatsu. That is the project that was going on during last year or I guess this past year and it’s finished now and ready for instruct to hook into it,” stated Commissioner Jensen. The potential to bring in new companies and businesses will be an easy sale now that the area has sewer and water available.
Although the area has access for sewer and water there are still some issues with that area that needs attention. “There’s still some needs for high pressure gas, and also power needs, and we’re working on those. We have engaged with the Utah Inland Port Authority, we expect that in January that the Inland Port Board will authorize their staff to create a project area on Ridge Road, that will open the door for some of the Utah Inland Port things to begin to help not only with financing, but potentially bringing folks in that would located some industry here,” said Commissioner Jensen. This will open up so many opportunities for companies to come in and set up shop on Ridge Road. Right now, the county specifically the Economic Development Office is working with a few companies to help get them established on Ridge Road.
The USU Eastern Aviation Department is now managing the Carbon County Regional Airport which is fitting as they are trying to build the Aviation Program, specifically the mechanic and airframe courses. “Those have been in the works. We have had great help from the Association of Local Governments, Jade Powell put together a grant application, that we’ve received approval from the federal government for some grant money to build an additional hanger and classroom for these two new programs. The engineering is being done currently on that and we expect that in early Spring we should have a contractor in there building that facility so that they can bring those other two programs down here,” stated Commissioner Jensen. Now with the managing of the airport under the direction of the Aviation Department, they are thinking of developing an Airport Management program, which they now could easily instruct from the facility.
