The USU Extension – Emery County is excited for the new year as this means new members can get signed up to be a part of the 4-H Teen Council. Extension Assistant Professors, Rowe Zwahlen stopped by Castle Country Radio to share the details.
“We are right now looking for new members for our Teen Council, so, yes, you have to been a teenager for that, that’s really our requirement and they’re a really nice group of kids. We focus on doing leadership and service activities for the community, and then they get to help plan some of our activities for the summer as well,” said Zwahlen. As a member of the council, you get opportunities to participate in state-wide activities like conferences and dances. The Teen Council is an important part to the 4-H Program.
The teens will have an opportunity to see and experience government workings at the State Capital in February. “That’s a statewide program, it’s a lot of fun and some of the teenagers will be able to participate in that. They get to go to the capitol, they get to talk and debate a bill, meet some of our state legislators, and there at the capitol building and do a tour and really understand how government works, it’s a good program,” said Wahlen. If your teen is interested in being a part of the Teen Council have them contact the USU Extension Office at (435) 381-2381.
Although the 4-H Stock Show isn’t till July 2024 there is some things to remember when it comes to your animal. “You need to have your animals at least 60 days a head for goats, sheep and pigs, and then 100 days a head for cattle. But you definitely can have them longer than that if you would like. What we’re really interested in is you have a good experience and learn something about animal science through the process,” said Wahlen. Another thing he wanted to remind those participating in the stock show was to keep up to date records.
