Coming off a home win over San Juan on Tuesday the Emery Spartans hit the road Wednesday to take on region foe Richfield. The second and third quarters were the Spartans undoing as the Wildcats took the game, 57-53.
Emery enjoyed a big win on their home court on Tuesday against the San Juan Broncos 69-50, ending the non-region part of their schedule.
On Wednesday, they would enter region play on the road taking on the Wildcats. Richfield was sitting at .500 with a 5-5 record overall and a 1-1 record in league play, but whenever these two teams hook up regardless of the sport or record, it’s always entertaining.
Emery would jump out to an early lead in the first, outscoring the Wildcats 17-13. The second quarter saw the Spartans slide back offensively as Richfield held them to just nine points and the Wildcats went on to score 17, taking a 30-26 lead into the locker room.
Coming out in the third, the Richfield defense was on point holding the Spartans to just 6 points in the quarter, while the Wildcats put up 14 carrying a 44-32 lead into the final eight minutes.
Moving into the fourth, the Spartans found that offensive spark again going on a run and putting up 21 in the quarter however, the Wildcats did just enough to hold on to earn the 57-53 win.
Luke Justice led the way for the Spartans scoring 18, Zack Tuttle added nine and Mason Stilson had seven in the loss.
Emery slips to 10-2 overall and holds a 2-1 Region 12 record, still sitting at the No. 2 spot in the RPI.
The Spartans finally get a break and won’t be back on the floor till Friday this time at home when they will face Manti (8-4, No. 5)
