Green River Pirate basketball looks a little different this season because the boys are the only team playing. The team has been at it since November, starting with a loss to Wayne. Going into the game on Tuesday night against Grand the Pirates had won four straight, sadly that streak came to an end as the Red Devils earned the 76-65 win.

The girls were unable to field a team this season, so the Green River boys will be flying solo. The Pirates have been led in scoring by senior Luis Hernandez at 14.5 points per game, followed by Raul Mendoza, another senior at 11.4 ppg.

The game with Grand was one of those where neither team wanted to give an inch, the first quarter was really where Grand took control, out-scoring the Pirates 22-7, but in the second Green River came out swinging trying to claw their way back outscoring the Red Devils by 10, 24-14 and cutting into the lead as Grand headed to the locker room up by a score of 36-31.

In the second half the Red Devils came out and returned the favor outscoring the Pirates 23-13 and pushing the lead to 15 points.  The fourth quarter was all about Grand maintaining their lead, and they did that, even though the Pirates outscored the Red Devils 21-17, Grand was able to stay just ahead taking the 76-65 win.

Hernandez led the Pirates with 20 in the contest, Rolando Anguiano scored 12 and Jarrett Guerrera added 11 in the loss.

Green River is sitting at 7-5 over and has a 2-0 region mark, they also sit at No. 12 in the latest RPI.

Up next for the Pirates, a road contest at Monument Valley on Friday, then back home to face Altamont on Tuesday, game time is set for 7:00 p.m..
