The Emery Spartans traveled to Roosevelt for the final road dual of the season Tuesday, squaring off with one of the elite 3A schools in Union.
The two squads battled back-and-forth before the Cougars pulled away late to grab a 42-31 win. The difference in the dual turned out to be three forfeits for Emery in the 190, 215 and 285 weight classes.
“We win seven matches, they win four and we lose the duel,” said head coach Kirk Christiansen. “We have to give up some forfeits and that really hurts, but I’m super proud of the boys.”
With the final road trip now in the books, the Spartans will shift focus to Thursday’s Senior Night against Maple Mountain. The evening will also feature several alumni matches, performances by the cheer squad and tumblers.
“We’ll have several alumni matches lined up and that should give us some fireworks,” said Christiansen. “The little guys look up to the high school kids, so it’s always fun to see the high school kids get to watch their heroes comeback and wrestle.”
Following Thursday’s home finale, the Spartans will prepare to host the divisional tournament on Feb. 2 and 3. Those who qualify will advance to the 3A State Championships on Feb. 16 and 17.
