This week’s Carbon School District weekly update shines a light on the Carbon High School. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Sterling Scholar Advisor, Lesley Davis to share some information about the Sterling Scholar program.

“The Sterling Scholar program its actually an academic competition where students can showcase their academic, extracurricular accomplishments throughout high school. They’ll create a portfolio it focuses on the category that they are chosen for; we have fourteen different categories. Then they can showcase their leadership skills as a high school student and being a good citizen, so community service and things like that,” said Davis. There are 14 categories and eight schools that compete in the yearly competition. The students are competing to win scholarships to continue their education at college level.

The Sterling Scholar for Music is Spencer Hepworth who spoke about his love for music, “I’ve been doing it since elementary school, my family has always been into music. Its started with my siblings and my dad, my dad always played the guitar at home with our family. Then I started playing the violin and the piano when I was in elementary school so I just started doing it while I was little.” He has prepared an instrumental piece to perform at the competition in Monticello in March.

Ella Anderson is the Sterling Scholar for Family and Consumer Science and explains what that means, “So Family and Consumer Science is tied in with FCCLA which stands for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and I’m the state president for FCCLA. So it’s a really awesome organization that ties in to Family and Consumer Science and those real life skills.” She has been in love with all aspects of Family and Consumer Science since entering Middle School.

Social Science Sterling Scholar, Cameron Jones has chosen history and talks about how he is preparing for the competition, “To prepare for this I’ve been doing this thing called National History Day, which is this, it’s like a science fair except for weird history nerds. Basically, you’re given some topic and you’re suppose to make a project about it. It can be anything ranging from like an exhibit to a documentary, I’m doing documentary.” He’s very excited to present his documentary at the competition in March.

This year’s Sterling Scholar Competition will be held at Monticello High School in Monticello on March 4. The awards ceremony will be streamed online at 6:00 pm at stream.utah.live
