The Carbon Lady Dinos solidified a spot in the final eight of the 3A State Championship Tournament with a lopsided 65-38 win over the Union Cougars Friday night in Price.

Receiving a bye in the tournament’s opening round, the No. 3 ranked Lady Dinos played host to No. 14 Union, who topped Juan Diego on Tuesday. Friday’s meeting was the second of the season between the two teams, both of which ended in Carbon’s favor.

Madi Orth stuffed the stat sheet for Carbon as she poured in a game-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds, five steals and a block. The dominance started early for Orth as Carbon captured a 21-6 lead at the end of the opening quarter.

Despite controlling the first eight minutes with ease, Carbon was held to just six points in the second quarter. Holding a 27-17 advantage entering the second half, Carbon erased all chances of a Union comeback with a 22-11 run to close out the third quarter.

Jacie Jensen provided a strong compliment to Orth as she finished with 16 points, while also grabbing eight rebounds and accumulating five steals. Amiah Timothy chipped in with 15 points and four boards and Kylan Sorenson logged the game’s only double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Union entered Friday’s win-or-go-home tilt riding a two-game winning streak. While the Cougars were playing their best basketball of the season, the Lady Dinos made it difficult to find consistency throughout the four quarters.

Lexie Davenport paced the Cougars with 11 points and hit one of the team’s two makes from the three-point line. Lydia Hoschouer scored eight points and Kayla Miller finished with seven.

Friday’s win allows Carbon to advance to the final stage of the 2023-24 season, which begins Thursday at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield. The tournament started on Tuesday with 19 teams and has featured no upsets through the first two rounds.

Up next will be a third meeting this season between No. 3 Carbon and No. 6 Juab Thursday at 4:10 pm. Carbon pulled out a slim 56-55 win back on Dec. 28, but convincingly defeated the Wasps 60-46 at home on Jan. 23.

The winner of Carbon and Juab will advance to the semifinals on Friday against either Richfield or Canyon View.
