Fortune Ward earned a third-place finish as the Carbon Lady Dinos put the finishing touches on the 2023-24 wrestling season Friday and Saturday at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.
Competing against a field of 16 teams, the Lady Dinos finished seventh overall as the team accumulated 78 points on 15 wins. Six of the team’s 12 competing wrestlers placed, with Ward leading the way to a third-place nod.
After receiving a bye in the opening round, Ward defeated Union’s Josie Prevedel by pinfall to advance to the 135-pound semifinals. A loss to Jaysie Abalos of Delta dropped Ward into the consolation bracket, where she would secure back-to-back wins, both by pin, to finish third with a 3-1 record over the weekend.
Codi Shaw was one of the top Carbon performers as she finished fifth overall in the 110-pound weight class. Suffering a loss in the quarterfinals, Shaw earned two straight wins by pin over Natalia Cardenas of Juan Diego and Emillie Memmott of Richfield. A loss to Juab’s Andelynn Stephensen dropped Shaw into the fifth-place match where she recovered with a win by pin over Whitley Kinross of North Sanpete.
Madison Arroyo also gave the Lady Dinos a solid fifth-place performance as she finished the tournament 2-2. A loss to Grantsville’s Kira Hart put Arroyo in the consolation bracket. She kept her season alive with a win by fall over Aspen Clark of Richfield. A loss in the following round sent Arroyo to the fifth-place match, where she defeated Kira Hart by fall, getting revenge on an earlier defeat.
Samantha Riddle, Rickelle Collins and Grace Lamb also placed for the Lady Dinos as each finished sixth in their respective weight class.
