The Lady Dinos have been in Richfield since Thursday taking part in the 3A State Championships. Carbon won their first contest, but on Friday they suffered the first loss against Richfield, dropping them to the third and fourth-place game on Saturday against Grantsville.

Carbon came away with an easy win on Thursday over Juab 45-30 setting up the showdown with fellow Region 12 member, the Richfield Wildcats. In the two meetings this season between the teams, each won on the other’s home court.

In the game on Friday, both teams knew that it wasn’t going to be easy to close the other one out, playing even in the first quarter. The Wildcats would take control, turning up the offense and outscoring the Lady Dinos by six in the second taking a 27-21 lead at halftime.

The third quarter brought more offense from the Wildcats, but Carbon wasn’t ready to give up yet as they would fight their way back cutting into Richfield’s lead going into the fourth, 44-36. The Lady Dinos came on strong trying to climb back against the Wildcats, outscoring them in the quarter 13-9, and even though they came close, Carbon lost 53-49, dropping them into the third and fourth-place game.

Madi Orth led the way with 18, adding three rebounds and an assist. Amiah Timothy scored 13 with three assists a pair of rebounds and steals. Jacie Jensen scored 10, grabbing five boards, two assists, and a steal.

Moving into Saturday, the Lady Dinos would face the No.1 team in 3A, the Grantsville Cowboys. Grantsville fell to the Emery Lady Spartans and fell into the bracket to face Carbon.

Grantsville is a very physical team and Carbon knew that they would have to match that to come out on top in this one.

Carbon stayed close in the first quarter as they trailed by only two headed to the second. Grantsville came out putting the clamps on the Lady Dinos holding them to just seven in the quarter, as the Cowboys took a 28-21 lead at the half.

In the second half, Grantsville kept Carbon at arm’s length outscoring them by five in the third and six in the fourth closing the door and ending the Lady Dinos season 66-48.

The three seniors showed up for the Lady Dinos with Timothy scoring 20 and grabbing six rebounds, Orth adding 15 points of her own with six rebounds, and Kylan Sorenson had two points grabbing six boards. Bailey Johnson added six points as well.

Carbon closed out the 2023-2024 season with a 19-8 overall record and ended the season in the No. 3 spot in the RPI.
