The Carbon School District update took time to shine a spotlight on Sally Mauro Elementary this week and Castle Country Radio was able to speak with Principal, Blake Allen and Instructional Coach, Kristina Anderson about how things are going at the school.
The curriculum that is taught to students all year is called Essential Standards. These standards are taught to students who then have to master the instruction. If students are unable to master the instruction, they are then put into Intervention Groups to receive extra assistance. “Then the teacher accesses them again to see where they are. The thing is we look at is growth. At Sally Mauro our big thing is growth. We want the students to always be growing, always be learning, and gain the knowledge that they are going to need to move on to the next level,” said Principal Allen. It’s a big shout out to the teachers as they work hard to instruct students to get them to eventually pass at grade level.
Reading is again a huge part of the curriculum at all schools in the district. Students at Sally Mauro take their reading very seriously, as Ms. Anderson explains, “We’re excited to see the growth the students are making, they’re about five to six percent higher than they were at this time last year. So we striving to reach our end of the year goal and maybe we’ll get Mr. Allen to do something crazy again.” The principal has been known to reward the student body with funny antics like cutting his beard off or dying his hair if students met their reading goals.
Special Teachers at the school are very important to the curriculum at Sally Mauro as Principal Allen explains, “These are our Art, Music, Computers, Library, and P.E. teachers. They’re something that are essential to the school. They take the kids for a period of time during the week so that the teachers can prepare, as well as, get more knowledge and more depth on some of the subjects. It’s a huge shout out to them, tracking and managing behaviors. Then their communication back with the teachers on how the students are doing. It’s just something fabulous we have at the school.”
