This week’s Carbon School District weekly update shines light on Wellington Elementary. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Principal Paulie Vogrinec to discuss what is taking place at the school right now.

Thursday of this week is the last day of third quarter and with that comes a fun assembly for the student body. “This is our second year doing it, our PTA they put it all together and they work with providers in the community – mental health therapists, doctors, some nurses, some cosmetology people and so they’re going to come out and do some little presentations with the kids,” said Principal Vogrinec. The demonstrations will consist of how to wash your hands properly, knowing your screentime limits, bike safety and wearing helmets. Last year was the first time a Wellness assembly was held and students really enjoyed the information that was shared with them during last year’s event.

Friday there will be no school as it is a Teacher Development Day. The Wellington Elementary teachers use this day to receive help in developing stronger instructional skills when it comes to the subject of reading. “We’ve been in a program that we’ve been learning about reading and the science of reading. So we take the day and spend it with a trainer and go over everything that we’ve been studying and learning about, and reading about for the quarter. Then we have a day with a trainer that reminds us of all the great things we need to be doing in our classrooms, and how it helps kids learn to read,” said Principal Vogrinec. The fourth quarter will begin on Monday.

Students will be in school for a few weeks before leaving for Spring Break which runs from April 2 through April 5. Once students return to school after the break there will be end of year testing and field trips to think about as school is on the final stretch.  “All of our grades choose where they like to go on field trip and so they select. Some grades it’s a tradition, like our fifth grade, in the district it’s a tradition that all fifth graders go to the Bee’s Game. Then other grades, it’s oh this group goes to Nine Mile or this group goes to Goblin Valley, so they all get to plan and pick,” said Principal Vogrinec.  Students will also have park day and field day to enjoy during the month of May.
