002-11

The Spartan baseball team started spring break on Monday by welcoming the No.2 Canyon View Falcons to Castle Dale for a region contest. Emery entered the contest with the No. 5 spot in the RPI, and while they were the first team to score, the later innings were all Canyon View as they claimed the 11-1 win in six.

On Monday, the Utah High School Activities Association released the first RPI rankings of the season. Emery owned the No. 5 spot and the Falcons sat at No. 2. With the loss the Spartans slipped to 9-6 overall moving to 2-2 in region play, and dropped to No. 6.

The Spartans put up one run in the bottom of the first when a Wade Stilson triple to center drove in Hayden Christiansen, that was the only run that Emery scored as Canyon View’s Brady Anderson would allow seven hits and just the one earned run striking out six and relying on his defense behind him to take care of the rest as the Stilson triple and Kade Larsen’s two doubles were the only extra-base hits allowed.

Stilson collected one hit and one RBI in the contest, Larsen earned two hits and Christiansen scored the only run in the Emery loss.

Turner Stoker got the start on the mound, taking the loss after four innings of work where he surrendered four hits, two earned runs, and striking out two. Garrett Conover came in going two innings with eight hits, nine runs, four earned, and striking out three.

The Spartans are on the road on Tuesday when they travel to Manti to face the No. 5 Templars, then they will welcome the Templars to Castle Dale on Friday.

Game time for Friday’s contest is set for 3:00 p.m..
