The Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) released their initial rankings for 3A softball Wednesday morning, and the Emery Lady Spartans and the Carbon Lady Dinos each earned a spot in the top ten.

For most sports, the UHSAA releases their RPI rankings, which are mathematically created based on the following formula- (45% x MWP) + (45% x OWP) + (10% x OOWP)

  • MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
  • OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponents (Note: this is not calculated via the combined record of the opponents, but rather by averaging the winning percentage of the opponents).
  • OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage: The same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.

The Morgan Trojans earned the top spot with an RPI of .742693, Emery is close behind with .732413. Juab, Providence Hall, and South Summit round out the top five with Carbon landing in the No. 6 spot. Fifty percent of the top ten is made up of teams from Carbon and Emery’s Region 12.

The Lady Spartans enter with a 10-2 overall record and are 6-1 in Region 12. Their last outing on March 29, was a 6-5 loss to the North Sanpete Hawks who handed Emery their first region loss. They get back to work on Friday when they head over the mountain to face the Manti Templars.

Carbon is sitting at 6-5 overall and holds a 4-1 mark in region play. They are coming off a 12-4 loss to Lehi last Wednesday and won’t head back to the diamond until Tuesday when they will travel to Castle Dale to face the Spartans. game time is set for 3:30 p.m..
