The USU Extension Office of Carbon and Emery County is excited to be hosting a Small Farms & Sustainable Homesteads Workshop on Saturday, Apr. 20 at 8:00 am till 12:00 pm a the USU Eastern Jennifer Leavitt Student Center. Castle County Radio was able to sit down with Assistant Professors, Steve Price and Rowe Zwahlen to get all the details.

“We are seeing that we have more people interested in having smaller farms. Maybe a few acres, and a lot of time they’re very diversified, there may not be so much profit driven, it’s more of a hobby farm stuff. So we get a lot of questions about how do we do some of these nitch sort of things or how can I be more sustainable on my small farm,” explained Price. This workshop is sure to help guide folks with their projects on their property.

There will be various classes ranging from Beekeeping Fundamentals, Organic Pest Management, Raising Quail and Freeze Drying. “So we got hopefully an exciting and interesting group of classes. So we’re going to be talking about the fundamentals of beekeeping – that’s one we get a lot of questions about, so hopefully people are excited for that. We’ll be talking about raising quail, something new. We’ll be having somebody talk to us about preserving food through freeze drying,” explained Zwahlen. There is a registration fee of $15.00 that will cover the day of classes.

These workshops are a great resource for any grower or beginner grower. “This is really, this is the kind of a homestead or small farm is the target audience. But if you’re looking to just get into this as a hobby or if you kind of have an interest in learning more, this is a great jumping off point for anybody that wants to learn about these,” said Price.
