Katelyn Nielson launched her fourth home run of the season as the Emery Lady Spartans clinched a season-series sweep over the Juab Wasps with an 8-2 win Tuesday afternoon in Nephi.

Kallee Lake pitched five scoreless innings, while striking out seven batters and allowing just two hits to earn the win. Brooklyn Ekker and Rheagan Rhoten both worked relief as the Lady Spartans improved to 8-3 in Region 12 play.

Nielson finished 2-3 at the plate as she pushed her batting average to .475 on the season. Adding a double to her stat line, Nielson now has nine extra base hits to go along with 20 RBIs in 65 plate appearances.

Emery captured the lead for good after two scoreless innings by plating two runs in the third. The game continued to hang in the balance until the Lady Spartans posted five runs in the top of the fifth to create a cushion.

Despite going hit-less in four at bats, Brooklynn Ekker finished the game with two RBIs. Lake helped push the Emery offense as she finished 2-3 with a single, triple and two RBIs. Madi Bunnell also finished with one RBI.

Tuesday’s win sets the stage for a short week for the Lady Spartans. Friday the team will return to the field to host the Delta Rabbits in the second meeting this season.

Emery remains in contention for a region crown with only three games remaining on the regular season slate. Currently the Lady Spartans trail both Carbon and North Sanpete by one game in the loss column.
