It’s time to sit down with Emery County Commissioner Jordan Leonard who was happy to report on a few items that were discussed at the last commission meeting and he also took time to highlight the Emery High Student Council. Castle Country Radio has the opportunity every other week to speak with the commissioner to keep citizens informed on the latest news and events.

There were a couple of Public Health presentations shared with residents of Emery County this last week regarding the dangers of vaping. There was also a discussion about working with the Bridge Program.  “Also, the Opioid Bridge Program, so this is a program that is for those struggling with opioid use disorder and they are asking for funding. We did table this one to see what type of finances we have to potential help fund a position here in Emery County at the clinic,” explained Commissioner Leonard. The county is trying to be proactive on a problem that is very challenging within the county.

Also, during the last commission meeting there was approval of partnering again with Active Re-Entry’s PERKIE Travel Program. “We’ve extended that for another four years; we partner on the van maintenance and things like that. We know it’s a use for our community and hope that the people can get the treatment that they need to get better. Excited to partner with them again for the next four years,” stated Commissioner Leonard. This is a great service that provides transportation to patients who need cancer treatments in Utah County.

The commissioners also took time during their meeting to approve Andrew Fry’s contract to continue his research work at the San Rafael Energy Research Center. “Andrew has been key in a lot of that research through BYU. He’s a local guy and we enjoy having him and we’ve renewed his contract to continue to work for us to develop different uses for coal, but more research and helping sustainability with coal,” said Commissioner Leaonard.

Like with every interview with Commissioner Leonard he always likes to take time to highlight a department within the community for a job well done. This time he switched things up, he decided to spotlight the Emery High School Student Council for their efforts in planning a huge Graduation Night activity. “We want to make sure that our kids are safe graduation night and let the community know that there’s an activity and it’s been going on for a long time, but there’s a lot of effort that’s put into this event to make sure that it’s fun enough that the kids want to be there and mingle and stay out of trouble. Just wanted to give a shout out to the Student Council for all the work that they’ve done and counselors and teachers that make that happen,” said Commissioner Leonard.

The Emery County Commissioners meet twice a month at 3:00 pm at the Emery County Courthouse at 75 East Main Street in Castle Dale. A schedule of meetings is listed on the Emery County website at http://www.emerycounty.com/
