
John Calvin Bastian, age 96, of Green River, Utah passed away on April 22, 2024 in Ferron, Utah.
Calvin was the fourth child born to George Antone Bastian and Carrie Roean Myers Bastian on June 16, 1927 in West Jordan, Utah. Calvin graduated from Green River High School. He married Phyllis M. Mackley on March 26, 1951 and was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Utah Temple on November 17, 1954.
Calvin served in the US Army (Korean War). When signing up he listed cowboy as his occupation. He has had a great love for Trachyte Ranch; located at the base of the Henry Mountains, Bastian Lake and two reservoirs at Trachyte. Calvin beamed with pride for all of the accomplishments accomplished at Trachyte; he has boxes of pictures of all the work done out there.
Calvin has had various jobs; he hauled Uranium and also mined Uranium. He drove trucks in road construction on a lot of the freeways and roads in Utah. Calvin built his own home with his father helping with the brick. He owned and operated a gas station and part owner in an ice business.
Calvin has a strong belief in his faith and served two stake missions, Carbon and Moab Stakes. He held many positions in the LDS church. He loved music and sang solos at church. Calvin loved working; he was still shoveling in his 80s. Faith, family, and freedom, this family has been blessed to have him at the helm.
Calvin is survived by his wife, Phyllis M. Bastian; children, John A. Bastian, A Elaine Kyle, and Kenneth D. Bastian; grandchildren, Cindi, Juli, Kevin, Monica, Brenda, Heather, Randy, and Kimberly; 20 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sister, Anna Marie Cavanaugh; and sisters-in-law, Bette Bastian and Lorna Bastian.
Preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Newell and Vonda Bastian, Jake Bastian, Keith Bastian, Myrtle Bair, and Ernest Bastian; brother-in-law, George Cavanaugh; children, Evelyn, David, Stephen, and Julia; grandchild, Terry; and great-grandchild, Zachary.
We would like to express our great appreciation and love for Trent Wood for the care he has shown for Calvin. Also for the two care centers that helped care for him, Pinnacle Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and San Rafael Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral Service, Saturday, April 27, 2024, 12:00 (noon), Green River Ward Chapel (101 North Clark Street) in Green River. The family will receive friends from 11:00 – 11:45 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place in the Price City Cemetery in Price at 3:30 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to Mitchell Funeral Home of Price and Huntington where friends are always welcome daily and may share memories of Calvin online at www.mitchellfuneralhome.net
