019-3

The Carbon Dinos solidified a spot in the 3A quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over the Union Cougars Wednesday afternoon in Price.

Entering the 3A state tournament as the No. 4 seed, the Dinos earned the right to host No. 13 Union. Carbon immediately took control, gathering a 2-0 lead by the end of the first half. The final half was a formality as the two teams played to a 1-1 tie.

Tyler Morris found the back of the net twice for the Dinos, while adding one assist to his stat line. Case Griffeth scored the other goal, while Sam Dart and Edwin Acosta-Sanchez each logged one assist.

Union’s soul goal came from Junior Pineda, who scored off an assist from Paulo Rivars.

Wednesday’s win marks the 13th of the season for the Dinos, but more importantly advances the team in the single-elimination tournament.

The Dinos will now shift focus to the quarterfinals, where they will host fellow Region 12 foe Juab, in the third meeting of the season between the two schools. Carbon swept the season series with Juab, grabbing a 5-1 win on the road back on March 13 and then registering a 2-0 shutout at home on April 5.

The win-or-go-home contest will take place at Carbon High School on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The winner will move on to the semifinals on Thursday, May 9 to face either No. 1 Manti or No. 8 Judge Memorial.
