The Lady Dinos softball team has battled since Thursday in Spanish Fork at the 3A State Championships. The season came to a close on Friday at the hands of North Sanpete in a close one 3-2.
Carbon kicked things off in Spanish Fork with a loss to Morgan in their first game dropping them into the one loss bracket, meaning that a state title was still in their grasp it was just going to be a longer road. In the second game on Thursday they faced the Union Cougars taking an 8-2 win, and then their third game on Thursday was a late night contest with Canyon View, where the Lady Dinos claimed an 8-3 win, setting them up for the game with North Sanpete on Friday afternoon.
Runs were at a premium for both squads as neither team could get much going. Carbon did get one run on the board in the first inning when Taylor Secor sent a pop fly single to the second basemen allowing Adri Abeyta to score. In the top of the second Shayla Penovich hit a pop fly reaching on an error by the first basemen and driving in Secor to give the Lady Dinos a 2-0 lead. North Sanpete would tie things up in the bottom half of the inning.
Both teams would go quiet as they would combine for just four hits in the next three innings, Carbon had their chance to break the stalemate in the top of the seventh when Secor hit a single and after two batters she was picked off on steal attempt for the final out of the inning. In the bottom of the inning with the bases loaded North Sanpete won the contest with a sacrifice fly to center,
Secor ended the day with four hits, an RBI and a run scored for Carbon. Kylan Sorenson had a pair of hits , and Penovich had one hit in the loss.
Sorenson got the start in the circle taking the loss after 6.1 innings of work giving up five hits, three earned runs and striking out six. Adams came in to close the game out.
Carbon ended the season 20-12 and held the No. 5 spot in the final RPI.
