Let the school district in Carbon help serve your child a healthy and nutritious meal over the summer break beginning on Monday, Jun. 3 running through till Thursday, Jul. 25. The cost is free for children under the age of 18 years old and adults may eat for $5.00. This year’s program underwent a few changes so Castle Country Radio invited Child Nutrition Director, Tonya Jones to talk about this summer’s program.
“There’s a little switch up and that’s due because we are considered a rural area and so they are allowing us to do non-congregate meal service. Which means that any body that comes and gets a meal, can just get it to go, and then just go home and eat it,” stated Jones. In the past, children were required to eat their meals inside the cafeteria but that will not be the case this year as all the meals will be to-go only.
New this year for the children is breakfast will be sent home daily with lunch, so the child can have a breakfast readily available. “That’s perfect for them because they can eat it when they get up in the morning. Parents don’t have to worry about fixing that meal. It will be pretty easy, you know it’ll be pancakes, pop tarts, cereal – you know just different things, per different day, but it’ll be very easy for the kids to eat that,” said Jones. The lunch program will be offered at all elementary schools in the district from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, Monday through Thursday.
Another new addition to this year’s Summer Lunch Program is weekend meals will be sent home with children every Thursday. “We decided this year that we would try the Monday through Thursday schedule and then we would send home breakfast and lunch for the weekend, so Fri., Sat., and Sun. You will pick up all those meals up on Thursday,” explained Jones. The program coordinators want to ensure that no child goes hungry this summer.
