
The opening round of the State Tennis Championships got underway on Thursday at Brighton High School. Carbon had seven members of their squad qualify for the post-season, and all advanced to the round of 16 taking place Friday.
Nick Bryner got things going in possibly the smoothest win of the day for the Dinos against Delta’s Ethan Oman in straight sets, 6-1,6-1. Bryner advanced to play Kiran Reddy from Waterford. Memphis Howell, in second singles, dropped his first set to Cooper Potts from Grand and came back to win the final two sets 6-4, and 6-4 to move on and face Aman Tuteja of Judge Memorial. Cameron Jones in third singles played the match of the day earning a grueling three-set win. In set one Jones was up 5-2, but Dax Helsten of Morgan came back to tie things up and win in a tie-break 7-6 (7-5). Set two was another battle with Jones getting the 7-6 win, and down at one point 5-1 Jones battled back to right the ship and close out the match 7-6 (7-3), he faces Rowan Hodell of Waterford in round two.
In the first doubles match, Josuah Trostle and Zander Carrillo earned a straight-set victory over South Sevier’s Carter Johnston and James Gay, 6-3, and 6-2, they advance and will face Will Damico and Duke O’Neil from Rowland Hall. Judson Varner and Carter Abbott, Carbon’s second doubles team, collected a hard-fought win over Eli Gulbrandsen and Asher Rosenthal of Maesar Prep, going to a tie break in the first set 7-6 (7-4), and then taking the 7-5 win to get the victory, they take on Richfield’s James Perschon and Ari Juluson.
The championships move to Liberty Park for Friday and Saturday’s matches.
