The 2023-2024 school year is coming to a close, and at this time of year, high school seniors typically pull off senior pranks, sluff days, and other such activities. But at Emery High School, the seniors decided to go out and make a difference with a senior day of service on May 16.
Easton Thornley, a senior Emery High Student Council member, explained the event’s purpose”” We went to the different city councils asking for donations to help us with our graduation party. In return, we offered to go out and do anything the town needed. We wanted to help give back to the communities that have helped raise us all these years.”
Many of the projects involved town beautification, with some groups focusing on town cemeteries and others performing general beautification in towns, such as cleaning up town roads. “A lot of people think that teenagers don’t do anything anymore, so we wanted to prove that we’re here, we like to help, and we’re thankful for the support they’ve given us.” Said Taya Cowley, another senior Student Council member.
“I’m proud of the kids and their hard work and dedication,” said adviser Tisha Thornley,” They worked really hard today. A lot of them were raking gravel, hammering out weeds and picking up garbage at the cemetery … I’m just proud that instead of not going to school, they chose to do some city service.”
