
The Carbon Dino soccer team ended their season on May 4 in the quarterfinal round of the State Championships for soccer with a 2-0 loss to Juab. The Dinos ended the season with a respectable 13-3 overall record and a 12-2 mark in Region 12 play, with the two losses coming from the eventual runner-up Manti.
Carbon ended the season with the No. 4 spot in the final RPI. The Dinos were a young team this year carrying only two seniors on the roster in 2024. There will be plenty of opportunity for underclassmen to step up next year.
Below is a recap of the games in the 2024 season.
March 7- North Sanpete
The Dino soccer squad got back on the field on Thursday against the North Sanpete Hawks, in a region match-up to kick off the season. Carbon opened up with three quick goals in the first half adding one more in the second to take the 4-1 win.
Last season, the Dinos ended with a 9-4 overall record going 6-2 in Region 12 play and earning the No. 5 spot ending the season in the quarterfinals with a loss to Morgan.
Carbon jumped out in the first half, holding North Sanpete scoreless, putting three goals on the scoreboard, and taking a 3-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, both teams would find the back of the net once, as the Dinos would hold on for the 4-1 win.
Tyler Morris found the back of the net twice for the Dinos, Logan McEvoy added two more with an assist. Drake Chappell, and Luke Brady each added an assist as well.
March 13- @ Juab
The Dino boy’s soccer squad earned their second win of the young season on the road in Nephi over the Juab Wasps. Carbon used three goals in the first half to take the win 5-1.
Carbon has now enjoyed back-to-back Region 12 wins after opening the season with a 4-1 victory over North Sanpete.
The game with the Wasps was all about the Dinos, as they would go on the offensive putting up three goals in the first half while allowing Juab one, as Carbon took a 3-1 lead into halftime.
The second half was a near copy of the first with Carbon finding the back of the net two more times closing out Juab to take the 5-1 win.
Logan McEvoy added two goals and an assist in the win. Case Griffeth had one goal and a pair of assists. Tyler Morris and Connor Cunningham had one goal each, and Luke Brady had an assist.
March 15- Delta
Two overtime periods weren’t enough when the Delta Rabbits and the Carbon Dinos took to the field on Friday. In a defensive battle that came down to penalty kicks, the Dinos came out on top 2-1.
Carbon sits at a perfect 3-0 early on this season, and every game they have played has been against a Region 12 foe.
The game was all about defense as neither team could find the back of the net in the first or second half, with the contest moving into overtime.
Even though they were given an extra 20 minutes to decide the outcome of the match the score remained 0-0 after both overtime periods, and they moved into penalty kicks, and at the end of that phase, Carbon was able to secure the win 2-1 on kicks.
March 20- @ Richfield
The Carbon soccer team has not lost a game yet this season, and after their trip to Richfield on Wednesday, the record remains untarnished. After a scoreless first half, both teams found the back of the net in the second to take the 4-1 win.
The Dinos sit at 4-0 this season overall and since every contest they’ve played has been in the region, they also have a perfect record there.
The first half was all defense, as neither team could find the back of the net on either side, playing to a 0-0 tie at the half.
The second half was when all the action started as both teams found their offense. Carbon was able to score four goals on the Wildcats as the Dinos’ defense was able to turn away Richfield, almost posting a shut-out but still taking the 4-1 win.
Connor Cunningham scored two goals for Carbon, and Tyler Morris added one. Luke Brady had the Dinos’ other goal along with an assist. Tayger Timothy, Logan McEvoy, and Ky Earl each collected assists in the win.
March 22- Manti
The Dino soccer squad was sitting at an unbeaten 4-0 mark headed into their meeting with the 6-0 Manti Templars, meaning something had to give when the pair met up in Price on Friday. The Templars had Carbon’s number holding them scoreless and finding the back of the net four times to take the 4-0 win to join Canyon View as the only two teams without a loss in Region 12.
Carbon is sitting at 4-1 overall and in region play, as we get ready to head into the second month of the season.
Manti came out in the first half putting one goal on the board and taking a 1-0 lead to halftime.
In the second half, the Templars found the gaps in the Dino defense putting three more goals on the board and shutting out Carbon to take the 4-0 win.
March 27- Emery
The Carbon Dino soccer team welcomed the Emery Spartans to Price on Wednesday for the first of two region match-ups this season. The Dinos defense kept the Spartans from finding the back of the net as Carbon earned the 4-0 win.
The win moves Carbon to 5-1 this season, and the same mark in Region 12 play.
Both teams entered the contest with different results than their last time out. Carbon was coming off a 4-0 loss to undefeated Manti, and Emery earned a 3-1 victory over Richfield.
Carbon jumped out in the first half putting three goals on the scoreboard while their defense turned the Spartans away at every opportunity. The Dinos took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
The second half of play was more of the same as the Dions added one more goal and Cannon Mortenson was able to hold on through the period to earn the 4-0 shutout between the pipes.
Tyler Morris found the back of the net for the Dinos along with Logan McEvoy, Sam Dart, and Connor Cunningham who each scored a goal. Case Griffeth, Mason Engar, and Edwin Acosta-Sanchez all collected assists in the win.
The loss moves the Spartans to 2-4 overall and in region competition. The Spartans will get back to the pitch on Friday when they welcome North Sanpete to Castle Dale at 4:00 p.m.. Earlier this season Emery came away with a 2-0 win in their first meeting.
April 3- @ North Sanpete
The Dino soccer team traveled to Mount Pleasant to face the North Sanpete Hawks in a region tilt on Wednesday. The Dinos jumped out early and kept it going taking the 6-2 win on the road. On Thursday, the Utah High School Association released their initial RPI rankings, and the Dinos landed in the No. 3 spot.
The win moves Carbon to 7-1 overall and region play and with the release of the RPI the Dinos hold the No. 3 spot. Fellow Region 12 member Manti owns the top spot followed by Morgan. Carbon, Ogden, and South Summit round out the top five.
Carbon was all business against the Hawks, coming out and finding the back of the net three times in the first half, the Dinos would take a 3-1 lead into the half. In the second half, it was a repeat performance as Carbon kept their foot on the gas both offensively and defensively, hanging three more goals on the scoreboard and holding North Sanpete to one goal as the Dinos earned the 6-2 win.
Logan McEvoy collected a pair of goals and assists for Carbon. Luke Brady scored a pair of goals and added one assist, and Tyler Morris added a goal and a pair of assists. Case Griffeth added one goal and Connor Cunningham one assist in the Dino win.
April 5- Juab
Carbon soccer has been enjoying a great season, and that continued on Friday when they welcomed the Juab Wasps. Cannon Mortensen and Ty Mortensen combined to shut out the Wasps, and the Dinos found the back of the net twice in the 2-0 win.
Carbon moves to 8-1 overall and in Region 12 play with the win, they also hold the No. 3 spot in the RPI, with fellow region member Manti at No.1. Manti is also the only loss on the Dinos record.
The Dinos put a goal on the board in the first half, and on the defensive side blanked the Wasps, as Carbon would take a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The second half was a copy of the first, as the Dinos would again turn away any Juab advances to keep them scoreless and Carbon would find the back of the net once more to earn the 2-0 victory.
Luke Brady and Edwin Acosta-Sanchez scored a goal in the win with Logan McEvoy collecting an assist in the Carbon win.
April 10 @Delta
The Dino soccer squad made the trip to Delta on Wednesday to take on the Rabbits. After a scoreless first half, Carbon found the back of the net twice in the second taking the 2-0 win.
The Dinos moved to 9-1 overall and hold the same record in region play. Carbon also sits in the No. 3 spot in the RPI and there are only four games left until the end of the season.
Carbon’s defense was on display the whole contest, as they were able to keep the Rabbits from between the pipes, but the Dinos were unable to score as well carrying a 0-0 tie into halftime.
In the second half, Carbon came out firing scoring two goals, and with Canon Mortensen in goal, the Dinos were able to shut out Delta and take the 2-0 win.
Tyler Morris and Luke Brady each scored one goal, and Connor Cunningham had an assist as well. Mortensen logged save number three and a half on the season in the win.
April 12- Richfield
Carbon soccer got back to the pitch Friday welcoming in the Richfield Wildcats. The Dinos jumped out fast on the Wildcats putting six goals up in the first half, and then played through the second half to take the 10-2 win.
Carbon holds a 10-1 overall record this season with the lone loss coming from the No. 1 team in 3A, the Manti Templars, who also reside in the same region as the Dinos, who sit at No. 3 in the latest RPI.
Carbon came out firing in the first half finding the back of the net six times taking a 6-1 lead into halftime. The second half was more Dinos as they got home four more times to take the final 10-2.
Case Griffeth scored three goals for Carbon. Tyler Morris and Connor Cunningham each scored twice with Morris adding three assists. Logan McEvoy, Mason Engar, and Luke Brady each had one goal, McEvoy added four assists and Brady had one. Sam Dart also had an assist in the Dino rout.
April 17- @ Manti
The Carbon boys were back on the pitch Wednesday when they traveled to face the No.1 Manti Templars. The Dinos were riding high on a six-game winning streak, but the Templars are undefeated this season, and they stayed that way handing Carbon their second loss this season, 2-0.
Manti has had the Dinos number as they earned wins in both meetings. Back in March, in Price, they handed Carbon a 4-0 loss, and then Carbon went 6-0, until they met up with Manti again.
Wednesday’s match was all about the Templar defense. Carbon was turned away at every opportunity, as Manti’s David Peterson and Branson Cherry combined for the shut between the pipes and Manti claimed the 2-0 win in front of their home crowd.
The loss drops Carbon to 10-2 this season overall and in Region 12 play. It also puts them in second place behind the Templars in the conference. The removal of the RPI means that the season is winding down. The Dinos have just a pair of games left on the schedule before the final RPI reveal and the release of the 3A State Championship bracket on April 24, with the playoffs starting two days later on the 26.
April 19- @ Emery
Emery and Carbon met for the final time in the regular season in Castle Dale on Friday. Emery made it a challenging contest taking the Dinos to overtime but falling 2-1, in their final home game of the season.
Emery is sitting at 4-9 overall and in Region 12 play, while Carbon sits at 11-2. The RPI has been removed until Wednesday when the final rankings will be released along with the bracket for the 3A State Championships, which begin on Friday.
The contest between these two teams was a defensive battle with Carbon finding the back of the net in the first half and taking a 1-0 lead into halftime. The second half was all about the Spartans as they were able to even up the score to tie at 1-1 by the end of regulation. In the overtime period, the chess match came to an end as the Dinos found the goal and earned the hard-fought 2-1 victory.
For the Spartans, Seth Winter came up with the lone goal.
For Carbon, Tyler Morris and Edwin Acosta-Sanchez collected both goals scored.
May 1- vs. Union- Second Round
The Carbon Dinos solidified a spot in the 3A quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over the Union Cougars Wednesday afternoon in Price.
Entering the 3A state tournament as the No. 4 seed, the Dinos earned the right to host No. 13 Union. Carbon immediately took control, gathering a 2-0 lead by the end of the first half. The final half was a formality as the two teams played to a 1-1 tie.
Tyler Morris found the back of the net twice for the Dinos, while adding one assist to his stat line. Case Griffeth scored the other goal, while Sam Dart and Edwin Acosta-Sanchez each logged one assist.
Union’s sole goal came from Junior Pineda, who scored off an assist from Paulo Rivars.
Wednesday’s win marks the 13th of the season for the Dinos, but more importantly, advances the team in the single-elimination tournament.
The Dinos will now shift focus to the quarterfinals, where they will host fellow Region 12 foe Juab, in the third meeting of the season between the two schools. Carbon swept the season series with Juab, grabbing a 5-1 win on the road back on March 13 and then registering a 2-0 shutout at home on April 5.
May 4- vs Juab- Quarterfinals
A battle between two Region 12 heavyweights lived up to the billing as the Carbon Dinos suffered a heartbreaking 2-0 loss to the Juab Wasps in the quarterfinals of the 3A state championship tournament Saturday afternoon.
Entering as the higher seed, the No. 4 Dinos earned the right to host No. 5 Juab. Both teams played stingy defense throughout the first half, marking a scoreless tie heading into the break.
Juab’s Nixon Curtis found the back of the net twice, once on an assist from Damian Reyes. The two goals were enough to propel Juab to the win and into the 3A semifinals.
Saturday’s meeting was the third of the season between the two teams. Carbon swept the regular season set, beating Juab 5-1 in Nephi and 2-0 at home.
The Wasps will now advance to the semifinals to meet No. 1 Manti, also from Region 12. No. 2 Morgan and No. 3 Ogden will square off in the other semifinals matchup.
Saturday’s loss brings an end to a successful soccer season for the Dinos. Closing out the regular season with a 12-2 record, Carbon finished second in the region to Manti. The Dinos advanced in the 3A state tournament with a 3-1 win over Union on Wednesday, May 1.
