
The Lady Dinos golf squad closed its season on May 9 at the 3A State Championships at Meadowbrook Golf Club. Carbon missed the day one cut in the team competition with Carly West, KaylynnBlack, and Grace Simms moving on to the individual matches on the final day.
Listed below is a recap of all the matches this season.
March 19- Canyon Hills- Juab
The Carbon Lady Dino golf squad got on the links after a late start to the season. On Tuesday they traveled to Canyon Hills Golf Club the home course of the Juab Wasps. After a day on the links, the Lady Dinos tied the Emery Lady Spartans for third with a score of 439.
The first two matches of the season were either canceled or re-scheduled so the Juab meet was the kick-off.
Richfield took the top spot with 349 points, host Juab claimed second with 388. Carbon and Emery tied with 439 and Manti finished in fifth with 440. Brielle Jolley of Richfield had a low round of 81.
For the Lady Dinos, Carley West led the way shooting an 85 which was 13 over par. Grace Simms carded a 94, Kaylnn Black scored a 118, and Leah Sweeny had a 142 to make up the scorers for Carbon.
April 1- Carbon Country Club
The Lady Dinos golf team welcomed the region to the Carbon Country Club on Monday. Unfortunately, Carbon only fielded three players so their overall score did not figure into the meet standings.
It has really been an up-and-down season for the Lady Dinos golf team. The match at Carbon was supposed to be the fifth match of the season, but due to weather issues the match at Delta has been canceled and will not be made up, there will also be weeks that there will be two matches to get back on track before the Region 12 championships take place on April 29.
Richfield claimed the top spot turning in a score of 352, and Juab was in second with 375. Manti, Emery, and North Sanpete rounded out the top five. Richfield’s Shelby Gardner carded the low round of 82 for the day.
The Lady Dinos only had three players take part in the match so their overall score did not count however the individual marks did. Of the three that did compete Carley West turned in the low round for the Dinos with an 88. Grace Simms shot a 97 and Leah Sweeney carded a 134.
April 8- Cove View- Richfield
Carbon girl’s golf was on the road on Monday to take on the Region 12 field at Cove View Golf Course the home of the Richfield Wildcats. Richfield was able to claim the top spot with 336, the Lady Dinos ended the day in fifth with 435.
Last week at the Carbon Country Club the Lady Dinos only had three players so they couldn’t count it towards their team score, but the individual scores do towards their year-end score.
The host Wildcats finished first with 335, and Juab claimed second with 388. Emery finished in third with 408, and Manti and Carbon rounded out the top five. Richfield’s Shelby Gardner had the top round of the day with 82.
Carbon’s Carley West shot an 84, and Kaylynn Black had a 98. Grace Simms carded a 105 and Leah Sweeney made up the rest of the top four for the Lady Dinos.
April 11- Millsite- Emery
The Lady Dinos traveled to Millsite, the home course of the Emery High Spartans. Carbon posted a score of 433 which was enough to land them in fourth place.
The season is headed into the final stretch with three region matches on the schedule before the Region 12 Championships coming up on April 29. The 3A State Golf Championships will take place at the Meadow Brook Golf Course on May 8 & 9.
Richfield took the top spot shooting a 320, Emery finished in second with a 379. Juab, Carbon, and Manti made up the top five. Shelby Gardner of Richfield carded the low round with a 76.
Carbon’s Carley West shot an 85 to lead the Lady Dinos. Kaylynn Black shot a 102, Grace Simms carded a 103, and Ashlynn Coho rounded out the scoring with a 143.
April 22- Palisades- Manti
April 25- Skyline- North Sanpete
The Carbon Lady Dinos put together a fifth-place performance in the second region golf meet of the week, on Thursday afternoon at the Skyline Golf Course in Mount Pleasant.
Carley West continued her consistent play as she finished with a team-best 91. Grace Simms helped push Carbon as she posted a 110, followed by Kaylynn Black’s 110. Leah Sweeney gave the Dinos their fourth score as she ended at 133.
Richfield once again claimed the match victory as they fired a team score of 317, beating second-place Juab by 71-strokes. Manti ended in a distant third at 426, followed by Emery’s 430. Carbon, North Sanpete, and Delta rounded out the competing field.
Thursday’s meeting comes following a make-up competition on Monday. Originally scheduled to travel to Palisades on March 25, weather forced a reschedule. Seven of the eight competing teams squared off Monday afternoon.
Richfield kept its unbeaten streak alive with a 62-stroke win over second-place Juab. Carbon finished in third after shooting a team score of 445, topping fourth-place Emery by 12 strokes. Manti, North Sanpete, and Canyon View rounded out the field.
West was once again the lead player for Carbon as she fired a 92. Kaylynn Black shot a 105 and Grace Simms followed with a 105. The fourth score was Leah Sweeny’s 141.
April 29-Meadow Brook- Region 12 Championships
The Meadow Brook Golf Course played host to the Region 12 championship Monday afternoon as Carbon, Emery, and the other six competing schools wrapped up the 2024 regular season.
The Richfield Wildcats finished off an unbeaten region campaign as the team gathered a first-place finish with a score of 326. Juab ended in a distant second with a 361, followed by Manti, Delta, and Carbon. Emery, North Sanpete, and Canyon View rounded out the field of eight, respectively.
Carley West paced the Carbon Dinos as she shot an 88, the lowest individual mark on the team. Grace Simms finished second on the squad with a 102, followed by Kaylynn Black’s 107. Leah Sweeney gave Carbon its fourth score with a 130.
As a team, Carbon solidified fourth place with a final score of 427, 11 strokes back of Delta, and seven ahead of sixth place Emery.
May 8 & 9- Meadow Brook- State Championships
The Carbon Lady Dinos completed the 2024 golf season with a 12th-place finish at the 3A state championship meet Thursday afternoon at the Meadow Brook Golf Course in Salt Lake City.
Carbon finished day one with a team score of 421, missing the cut for the second and final day by just three strokes. While the team’s season ended, Carly West, Kaylynn Black, and Grace Simms all qualified for the final day, representing Carbon as individuals.
West earned a 15th-place finish individual as she shot an 87 and 89, ending with a two-day total of 176. West was just six strokes back of a top-ten individual finish.
Kaylynn Black ended up in a tie for 34th place after trimming five strokes off her day one total. Black wrapped up the first round with a 102 and managed to wrap up the season on a positive with a 97.
Grace Simms also earned a top-50 finish as she claimed 43rd place. Simms ended day one with a 103 and followed up with a 101 on the final day of the competition.
