May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Castle Country Radio wants to shine a light on people and organizations in the community who make it a priority to put mental health first. We had the opportunity to sit down with Ponderosa Grill owner Sarah Gordon to talk about all things mental health.
Opening our interview, we talked about the community support Gordon has felt for the events they hold at Ponderosa Grill such as question, persuade, refer (QPR) training. “In our last training, we had over 50 people, and it was so wonderful. There are a couple of kids, Quinton Sorensen put together a three-on-three basketball tournament where all the money raised went toward mental health awareness. And Jordan Ekker who organized a softball tournament. I just feel like the community is kind of hugging me.”
Next, we discussed what the purpose of QPR is and why it’s important. “A lot of times when someone is struggling with suicidal ideation they need someone to talk to. So this (QPR) gives you some questions to ask. It also helps give you some places you can refer them to, and the one I remember best is 988.”
After this, we asked Gordon about the importance of mental health not just to herself, but to the greater Carbon and Emery areas as well. “If you had a broken bone, you’d go to the doctor, your mind should be no different. It’s something we need to take care of, and it’s not something we should be ashamed of.”
To close out our interview, Gordon shared a message for those who may be struggling with their mental health. “I want to say that it’s OK, boom, period. I’d also like to say to give yourself some grace. You’re not weak.”
For those struggling with thoughts of suicide, the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline can be reached by dialing 988 any time for support. Resources are also available at utahsuicideprevention.org.
