“The first inning we had a couple of errors that essentially cost us four runs,” said manager Rob Smith. “Later in the game in the sixth inning we another error that they scored three runs there. It’s tough to win a ball game with crucial errors that cost us six or seven runs.”

April 19- vs. Juab

On Friday, the Dino baseball squad was on the field to take on the Juab Wasps. Juab is one of the top teams in 3A along with the Dinos. April 26- vs. Emery

A late venue swap and high winds added drama to Friday’s rivalry matchup as the Carbon Dinos completed a season-series sweep over the Emery Spartans with a 4-2 win in Castle Dale.

The second meeting between the two teams was scheduled to take place at Carbon High School. Rain throughout the morning and early afternoon forced the game to be moved to Emery High School, marking the second meeting in four days between the two teams on Emery’s diamond.

“Our field was playable, but if we had gotten any more rain, we wouldn’t have been able to play,” said Carbon manager Rob Smith. “Emery hadn’t had rain all day and we wanted to get the game in, so we decided to move it down here.”

The chaos, uncertainty and weather did not affect Carbon pitcher Maizen Prichard in the least. Fresh off a 12-strikeout performance against Manti last week, Prichard was sharp again as he fanned 15 batters and allowed just five hits in a complete game performance.

Giving up one run in the top of the first inning, Prichard was nearly flawless the rest of the way. Working an array of pitches, Prichard held the top five batters in Emery’s lineup to 3-13 combined at the plate,  with eight strikeouts.

“Maizen is throwing really well the last few outings,” said Smith. “He had 12 strikeouts last game and 15 this game. I’ve told him to go throw strikes and not waste pitches. He’s throwing around the zone and allowing our defense to make plays.”

Emery also received an outstanding pitching performance as senior Wade Stilson matched Prichard with a complete game. Giving up just five hits, Stilson recorded nine strikeouts and walked just one batter. Two of the four runs scored against Stilson were unearned.

The Spartans took an early lead in the top of the first inning as Treven Gilbert scored Mason Stilson from third base on a sacrifice to left field. The Dinos immediately responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, as Jace Barlow scored Peyton Molinar on single to right field.

Carbon captured its first lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning after taking advantage of multiple Emery mistakes. With one out in the frame, Logan Bennett reached safely on a dropped third strike. Bennett would cross home plate moments later off a throwing error, giving the Dinos a 2-1 lead.

Following a scoreless third inning, the Spartans climbed even with Carbon as Braxton Butler scored on a Hayden Abrams single. Carbon again immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning. Representing the go-ahead run in the fourth, Michael Vigil reached safely with a walk. Back-to-back stolen bases put the important run on third. A two-out error led to a run for Carbon, breaking the tie for good. Vigil added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth off an RBI single from Bennett.

Down to their final three outs, the Spartans threatened Carbon in the top of the seventh inning. Abrams started a potential rally with a leadoff triple, putting the tying run in the batter’s box. Prichard respond with three straight strikeouts to preserve the win.

“Our boys came out swinging, ready to go and had great approaches,” Smith said when asked about the Carbon offense. “Wade (Stilson) is a great pitcher, and we knew that coming into the game. We knew we had to score some runs, so you have to hand it to our hitters.”

May 3- Opening round- vs. North Sanpete (Games 2 & 3)

The Carbon High School baseball season came to a shocking end as the North Sanpete Hawks stormed back to win the best-of-three-series with two straight wins Friday afternoon in Price.

Carbon held control of the series after earning an 8-5 win in Game 1 Thursday afternoon. The Hawks however answered back by grabbing a slim 5-4 win in Game 2 Friday afternoon, setting up the decisive Game 3. North Sanpete produced five runs in the second inning of the win-or-go-home game, taking the lead for good in the eventual 5-3 win.

The two games Friday afternoon nearly mirrored one another. North Sanpete scored the bulk of their runs early in both games and trailed just one of the combined 14 innings.

Michael Vigil was charged with the loss on the mound in Game 2 of the series, despite a solid complete game performance. After allowing three runs in the top of the first, Vigil pitched four scoreless frames. Allowing just six hits, he finished with six strikeouts to go along with five earned runs.

The Dinos were held to just eight hits in Game 2. Jace Barlow finished 3-4 with two RBIs and a triple, batting out of the cleanup spot. Logan Madrigal also finished with multiple hits as he ended 2-4 with two singles. Tyrus Madsen and Diego Vega each finished with one RBI.

Trailing 5-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Dinos nearly pulled off the come-from-behind win to secure the series. Barlow ripped a one-out triple to center field, scoring Maizen Prichard and Rydge Butler. With the tying run standing on third, North Sanpete responded with a strikeout and popup to wrap up the win.

Carbon responded to the Game 2 loss with a quick start to Game 3. Madrigal scored Logan Bennett on a ground ball for the game’s first run in the bottom of the first. On the ensuing at bat, Vigil doubled to right field, scoring Madrigal to give Carbon a 2-0 lead.

North Sanpete had an immediate response putting together a two-out rally by scoring five runs. The score remained 5-2 until the Dinos cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fifth when Madrigal brought in Maizen Prichard with a single to right field.

Carbon nearly had a breakout inning in the bottom of the sixth. With bases loaded and two outs, Prichard stepped to the plate. North Sanpete sophomore pitcher Bryce Swapp got out of the jam with a four-pitch strikeout.

Peyton Molinar gave the Dinos a complete game effort in the final game of the season. Molinar fanned five batters and allowed seven hits in seven innings.
