There’s always been something special about the Castle Country area when it comes to the spirit of service that lives here. Whether it be coordinated relief efforts or simply offering a helping hand to a neighbor in need, there’s something about our area that inspires people to help.

One organization that needs this spirit is the Carbon County Food Bank. Sophia Jones from the food bank joined Castle Country Radio to talk about the organization’s need for volunteers.

Jones first explained that the Carbon County Food Bank is a choice pantry, which means that those who come to the pantry are presented with shelves of groceries and pick out what they need to help provide.

These groceries are provided through a variety of means, with roughly 32% of items coming from grocery rescues. Jones explained what these rescues entail stating,” We have a couple of different stores in our community that save groceries that may have gone a little bit past and we go and pick them up. Something that they wouldn’t be willing to sell in the store, but something that’s absolutely still good. And we go and pick them up Monday through Thursday. And we use that in our Carbon County food bank for our clients.”

After this, Jones explained some of the different roles the food bank is needing volunteers for,” we have volunteers come in sometime in the morning to help stock shelves, to help clean. And then while we’re open, our volunteers have the opportunity to help our clients with whatever shopping they need.”

Jones also expressed gratitude for those who volunteer, saying,” And we appreciate all the work that our volunteers do. It’s truly amazing, and we wouldn’t be able to function without them. And that’s why it’s so critical that we have volunteers and to be able to help with all of the services that we provide for the community.”
