It’s almost Pioneer Day which is set for this Wednesday, July 24. The celebration commemorates the arrival of Brigham Young and the first group of Mormon Pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847. Along with Pioneer Day comes the Days of 47’ Parade held in Salt Lake City each year, which features floats, horses, clowns and performances from marching bands from around the state. This year the Emery and Carbon High School bands are joining together to perform in the parade.
Emery High Band Director David Bird spoke to Castle Country Radio regarding the collaboration, sharing,” This has been one of the most incredible experiences as a musician for me. Last year when I heard the combined band start playing together it was pretty emotional for me. Our kids enjoy it and I can’t explain to you what it’s like to have about a hundred kids with a common purpose marching together and making some awesome music.”
This marks the second year that the bands have joined together to perform in the Days of 47’ Parade, something which Bird described as starting to become a tradition for the two groups.
“It is awesome that we can join with our rivals and there are no ill feelings and the common chords of music bind us together!” Stated Bird,” It’s just awesome to see how amazing the programs are together.”
The Days of 47’ Parade is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24. The parade will be televised as well as streamed online by KSL.
