With heavy hearts, and many bad words to say, our loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, aunt and beloved friend, Joni Barker Hackwell, age 61, passed away on July 21, 2024, at Utah Valley Hospital, surrounded by her family, from injuries that were sustained from a horse-riding accident.

Joni was born to Verdis and Pauline Barker of Wellington on February 15, 1963 and was the youngest of five kids. She married the love of her life, Richard Hackwell, on April 23, 1982 and were later solemnized on April 23, 1983 in the Provo Utah Temple. Together they have 5 children, and 17 grandchildren.

She loved being a mother, but her greatest joy in life was being a grandmother. Some of her favorite times were sitting in the crowd cheering on her children, grandchildren, and all that considered her a mom or a grandma, at all of their activities. It was so important to her to create memories with them. From Sunday dinners, to family trips, to service projects, even as a family. If we were to list all of the hearts that she has touched through her selfless acts and service, the list would be endless. Anybody that knew her was very blessed to call her their friend, and she was willing to give everything to anyone, even if she went without. Her Christlike example will be missed. She was never afraid to talk to strangers and she’d love to make new friends on all of her trips and adventures. She sure lived her life to the fullest and didn’t miss a beat. Her new favorite day of the week was Tuesday, when she got to attend the temple with her husband as an ordinance worker.

Joni is survived by her loving husband, Richard Hackwell, Price; one daughter and four sons, Britanie (Brett) Butler, Price, Tyson (Heather) Hackwell, Huntington, Brandon Hackwell, Soda Springs, ID, Nathan (Natasha) Hackwell, Spring Glen, and Joshua (Camary) Hackwell, Springville; grandchildren, Ryker, Rydge, Rylee, Madisyn, Sydney, Tryston, Ariya, Tytus, Remington, Tregon, Leighton, Lochlon, Noxx, Nixlee, Jordon and Alex; mother, Pauline Barker; two brothers and one sister, Brent (Marjorie) Barker, Jayline (Doug) Gardner and Dorrell (Michele) Barker; brothers-in-law, Tom Dimick and Tony Mathis; mother-in-law, Anne Giles; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and a community of friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the emergency room staff at Castleview Hospital, the staff at Utah Valley Hospital ICU for providing her care in her last moments, and the staff at Mitchell Funeral Home.

Joni is preceded in death by her father, Verdis Barker; sister, Dana Dimick; in-laws, Doug (Monique) Hackwell and Delma Hackwell; brother-in-law, Robert Mathis; granddaughter, Navi Hackwell; and a nephew, Dayton Gardner.
