The summer harvest season is in full swing, and along with that comes the rise of farmer’s markets across the nation. In Carbon and Emery County, that means the return of Carbon and Emery Farmer’s Market which takes place every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon in the Sutherlands parking lot.

Castle Country Radio sat down with Al Hughes and Ed Callor from the Farmer’s Market to talk about what’s going on in the market.

One thing that stands out about the farmers market is that the booths are SNAP card eligible, with Hughes explaining,” If they come to the upper booth, Utah State University has a booth and they sign up with them. They can also get the seniors coupons in that booth.”

Another feature of the farmer’s market is that it is entirely built by local vendors. “We’re kind of a cooperative farmers market whereas no one person’s in charge.” stated Callor,” we have a rule that at least no more than a third of the booths can be craft booths. Everything else has to be food or something, baked goods, and they have to be produced in Carbon or Emery County.”

Callor also wanted to take the time to talk about his booth at the market,” We own ELC Gardens in Helper. We not only sell vegetables when they’re in season, but we also have flowers, flower arrangements, you name it. All the flowers you see on Helper Main Street are the ones that we put in and take care of the rest of the year.“

Closing out our conversation, Hughes spoke excitedly about the market,” This is a wonderful opportunity to get out and meet the people who produce food locally and buy fresh food, and although we’re not organic producers, a lot of us follow organic practices as much as possible. So it’s an opportunity to get locally produced food, support your local farmers and just, and just have a good time because there’s things to do and people to talk to.”

To visit the Carbon and Emery Farmer’s Market it takes place every Saturday through Oct. weather permitting, from 9 a.m. to noon. To stay up to date the market can be found on Facebook here.
