Emery Lady Spartan soccer is getting started on Tuesday as they will travel to Millard to open the season. Emery is looking to rebound from last year with a new head coach and a team of players ready to make last season’s 0-17 record a memory.
First-time head coach Pennie Stewart takes the reins this season and brings along assistants Dani Tuttle and Abbie Christiansen. Coach Stewart was a guest on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports and discussed getting the team together.
“We’ve got a really, really young team. We don’t have very many returning seniors, and we’ve got a lot of girls that are fresh like me, they’ve never played before. Just watching them coming committed to practices regularly through the summer has really, really been beneficial their passing is on point and I’m super excited to see how we can continue to get better that way too.”
Tuesday the season starts in earnest as they travel to take on the Millard Eagles who finished the season 10-5 last year, Millard ended last season in the quarterfinals with a loss to eventual runner-up St. Joseph.
Region 12 doesn’t look to be any easier this season with five teams in the conference this season that ended last season in the top 10 in the state according to the final RPI rankings. Early projections have Manti finishing atop the standings followed by Canyon View, Carbon, Juab, and Delta taking the top five spots. Richfield, North Sanpete, and Emery make up the rest of the region. Despite the way last season ended for the Lady Spartans, Coach Stewart is very optimistic.
“As a parent to one of the players last year I watched them, and they kind of had a rough season with a lot of losses, I’m super excited to work with them and try and get their team comradery together and pull them together. We’ve spent a lot of time in the spring and through the summer doing open fields. Hopefully, we can up our game, and I’m super excited to see where the program can go up from last year.”
