Emery County Commissioner Jordan Leonard joined Castle Country Radio for a biweekly update on all things Emery County.
July was a crazy month for Emery County, with events running from the annual Emery County Fair to a catfishing tournament in Green River,” The county fair was fantastic. We were able to get the community together. A lot of people that I haven’t seen in a while I was able to rub shoulders with, and so I think it’s really good for our community that way.” Commissioner Leonard continued,” And then we had a catfishing tournament in Green River. It was fun, we had a lot of participants, I think there were over 180 that participated in the tournament. There were some big fish caught, I think the biggest was right around 27 inches. And then we had the Southeastern Utah Livestock Show, and I think everybody remembers the fire that happened. So that had to be moved from Ferron to Castle Dale. And so it was great to see the people put it together, the committees, the cities working together to make sure that event happened.”
Looking toward what’s coming up next for the county, Commissioner Leonard spoke on the upcoming ‘Coal Country Clash’ baseball tournament which starts on Friday, Aug. 9,” this is for eight years old to 14 years old, the different age groups at the Huntington Baseball/Softball complex. So that will be a good activity and a good event.”
Change is happening in Emery County, and one thing that has been catching everyone’s eye is some recent construction that was going on in Huntington. Commissioner Leonard explained what exactly this construction is leading to,” So that is the new Senior Citizen Center building for Huntington. We will use that building to do our Meals on Wheels and have a central location. And then it will be nice to have a new building where we can do events with our senior citizens. “
As usual, Commissioner Jordan wanted to spotlight an organization within the county that has stood out lately,” let’s give a shoutout to our building department and also our building department as well as the cleaning of our facilities. With the county fair, we had a lot of people going through our county buildings and libraries. And we just appreciate all of our help not only cleaning our buildings, but we are remodeling our county office administrative building.” Commissioner Jordan continued,” And so we’ve redone some offices with security walls. We’re currently looking at redoing bathrooms and upgrading carpets and things like that. So just a shout out to Kyle and his team with building maintenance and our cleaning crew throughout the county.”
Closing out our conversation, Commissioner Leonard left the listeners with the following,” we just appreciate all the support. And stay tuned to our commission meetings and our city council meetings. It’s a lot of work to try to improve the community. And we need everybody’s support to be on committees, to be on boards, as well as volunteers to get things done. So if you want to be involved, let us know, and we will definitely put you to work.”
