
The Green River Pirate baseball squad returned to work last Wednesday when they traveled to Tropic to face the Bryce Valley Mustangs. The Mustangs’ defense kept the Pirates off the board not only pitching a shutout but didn’t allow a single hit or a walk, taking the 11-0 win.
Last year the Pirates lost in the first round of the playoffs to the No. 1 team in 1A Panguitch. Green River finished the season 3-13 overall going 2-10 in region play and sat in the No. 16 RPI spot.
In their first outing of the season, the Pirates couldn’t find their footing giving up four runs in the bottom of the first. They were able to hold the Mustangs scoreless in the next two innings and then Bryce Valley would go on to score a pair of runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth closing out the game 11-0
Green River could not create any offense as the Mustangs used five different pitchers in the game to throw a combined no-hitter, plus they did not allow a walk.
The Pirates used three pitchers in the contest with Mauricio Hernandez getting the start going one inning giving up four runs, three earned on three hits. Jason Hernandez put in a couple of innings of work with two hits, two earned runs, and striking out one. Rolando Anguiano closed out the game giving up five runs on one hit while striking out two.
The Pirates will have their home opener on Wednesday when they welcome the Valley Buffalos to Green River. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m..
