It’s time for another Carbon School District update. This week, Castle Country Radio has the chance to sit down with Castle Heights Elementary Principal Wendy Fluckey and PTA President Leslie Holzer to talk about the return to school and what this year may have in store for the Castle Heights Knights.
The first topic of discussion was how the start of the school year has been for Castle Heights,” it’s been busy, but it’s been a good busy. We’ve been here for weeks preparing for the kids to come back. And we have lots of activities planned and it’s just been very, very busy.” Said Principal Fluckey,” In fact, I had my teachers over the summer several days come in and work just preparing for the new CKLA language arts curriculum that we’re implementing. So, they have worked hard this summer.”
On the topic of summer work involving language arts, the school celebrated the students who participated in and completed the school’s summer reading program with a parade.” This last summer there was no funding for the summer school program.” Shared Principal Fluckey,” And so, we went ahead and implemented a challenge to students to read at least four books over the summer and then log that. And students that had met that challenge got to join in our reading parade.”
After this, Holzer spoke on some ongoing and upcoming events for the PTA,” We still have our membership drive going on. So, we’re looking for new members.” Holzer continued,” We will also later in September have our fall festival, which will be an outdoor dinner and games. And we’ll have some bingo and cornhole. So, that will be a lot of fun out on our back playground.”
Both Principal Fluckey and Holzer then took the time to share what they were most excited about for the upcoming school year. Principal Fluckey kicked things off by saying,” First of all, I’m looking forward to working with PTA. We have a great presidency, and a great board, and I just would like to encourage parents to join. Our PTA does so many things for our school to bring fun, family-engaging activities for our kids … But I’m just looking forward to a great school year and another successful school year.”
Holzer added to this by saying,” I think I’m looking forward to doing the things that we’ve done traditionally. I’ve been involved at the school for a long time, and some of these have just been longtime traditions, our open libraries, and things like that. So I’m also looking forward to bringing in some of the new activities that my new board has come up with.”
Parents who have an interest in joining the Castle Heights PTA can either pick up an envelope in the front foyer of the school to pay the membership fee or scan a QR code being brought home by students to pay digitally.
Closing out our conversation, Principal Fluckey left everyone with a very simple message,” Just continue to support the school and be an active parent and remind your kids to read.”
