It’s time for another Carbon County School District update. This time around Castle Country Radio was joined in the studio by Student Council Adviser Alisa Black as well as Student Council President Kajsia Jones, Student Council Vice President Maya Hansen, Historian Kyle Nelson and Secretary Joelle Frandsen to talk about all things HMS.

Getting things started Black spoke on the summer prep the employees at HMS performed,” A lot of teachers go in throughout the summer and get our classrooms ready for our new students. We get excited about the new year,” she said,” As far as student government goes, my job is pretty easy because I have such amazing youth leaders here.”

Then taking the mic was Jones, who spoke on why she ran for her position,” I thought that I’d be a great fit to be president because I’m a very good leader and I also just wanted to just show people that I’m kind and sweet and all of that.”

Jones also talked about the middle school’s new motto,” It’s growth, grit, Rams don’t quit. It’s just our school’s really about grit. They want us to push ourselves to our highest levels to get to where we want to be.”

Another topic covered by Jones was her goals as president,” I’m trying to make every student feel loved and just make sure that they always have a friend they can have and someone they can just talk to if they need help.”

Next, it was Nelson, who talked about the different sports going on in the fall season,” we have the volleyball team, and they’re doing well this year. We have the cross country and the football teams as well. In football we’ve won once so far out of all the games.”

Then Frandsen took the time to speak, first discussing some service projects that the student council was planning,” We do stuffed food bags for the Carbon Cares for Kids. And we also have a couple of dances. One of them is a spring fling dance, and it donates money to help with the Price River cleanup.”

Last but not least it was Hansen, who first spoke on the schools spirit days,” so usually on Wednesdays, we have a little group thing, and all of us representatives, we’re like, OK, this is what we should do. We’ve done anything but a backpack day. We have done crazy hair. We have done dress like a teacher, cross country, dress like your favorite sport, all these things, and they’re pretty fun.”

Hansen also spoke on the student council’s participation in December’s Helper Light Parade and food drive,” the Light Parade is the most fun. We always get to walk down and we wave at everyone.” Hansen explained,” The food drive is one of my favorite parts of the year, because you feel like you’re doing something for people, and it just feels really good afterward.”

Closing out our interview, Black again took the time to speak, this time on what she’s most excited about for the rest of the school year,” Just the sheer amount of students we have participating in student government this year. There are 28 in total. I’ve never had this many, so I can’t wait to see what the year holds for us.” Black continued,” There are lots of activities for the kids that they’re going to be planning, and they do everything on their own. I just kind of sit back and guide them, but they plan everything, and they’re a bunch of go-getters. I’m excited about what the year will bring.”
