For the first time since the introduction of the RPI, the Emery Spartans have claimed the No. 1 spot in the 2A classification.
Five weeks into the season, the Utah High School Activities Association unveiled its inaugural RPI rankings. Emery finds itself in a competitive race for the top position. The three-time defending state champion, San Juan Broncos, trail the Spartans by a mere 0.014 percentage difference as both teams hold a 4-1 record.
The American Leadership Academy Eagles narrowly edge out South Sevier for third in the rankings as both sit at 3-2. Layton Christian Academy completes the top five. Only the top four teams in the current RPI have winning records.
Delta, South Summit, Judge Memorial, Summit Academy, and Grand round out the top 10. Providence Hall, which is still on the hunt for its first season win, ranks last at No. 11.
The current RPI points highlight a significant lead for Emery and San Juan over the rest of the 2A classification. This adds an extra layer of excitement to this Friday’s south region opener, where the two top teams will face off in Castle Dale.
In 2022 the two teams had a thrilling semifinals matchup, with San Juan clinching a hard-fought 56-48 victory to advance to the 2A state title game. Last season San Juan dealt the Spartans their only region loss of the season.
