In the 2020 U.S. Census, Green River was reported as having a population of 847 people. In 2024, Green River High School celebrated its graduating class of 17 students. The small but resilient community is always looking forward to how to expand, and on Friday, Sept. 20, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced that federal aid was coming to help realize this vision.
In a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, Buttigieg wrote,” We’re investing in communities of all sizes through President Biden’s infrastructure law. In Green River, UT the population is a little under 1,000 and growing. We’re supporting plans for a new road with updated lighting, utilities, and signage to accommodate growth.”
The law in question is a part of the Department of Transportations Thriving Communities Program. According to the USDOT website,” TCP facilitates the planning and development of transportation and community revitalization activities and provides tools to ensure that under-resourced communities can access the historic funding provided in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).”
This bill includes approximately $1.2 Trillion dedicated to improving America’s infrastructure through improvements to broadband access, clean water, electric grid improvements and road and highway improvements.
Castle Country Radio reached out to Green River City Manager Edward Bennett who stated,” We are partnering with DOT on a thriving communities project. It will be very exciting to go through this process with not only DOT but our community and technical advising partners as well.”
According to the project description,” The City needs safe streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and crosswalks for its downtown, which faces heavy truck traffic … The City of Green River and its partners will use TCP support to equip staff and contractors with the analytical and communication skills necessary to collaborate regionally as well as to effectively access and manage federal funding for transportation-related projects.”
Green River was selected for the TCP in April, as a part of the second round of selections.
