On Sunday, Sept. 22, deputies from the Emery County Sheriff’s Office engaged in a high-speed chase with a 21-year-old Colorado man attempting to outrun the officers outside of Green River. The police report states that the man from Millikan, Colorado, reached speeds of up to 130 mph.
The chase started on eastbound I-70 when an ECSO Deputy noticed the man going 83 mph in the 65 mph zone. The Deputy attempted to pull the man over, but instead of stopping the 21-year-old accelerated rapidly in an attempt to outrun the police.
According to the charging document, the man “passed several vehicles on the right traveling upward of 130 mph and switching lanes through traffic.” This occurred in a construction zone where the posted speed limit is 65 mph.
The chase ended when officers were successfully able to spike the vehicle’s tires, halting the man in his tracks.
On Tuesday, Sept. 24 the man was charged in Utah’s 7th District Court with counts of failing to respond to an officer’s signal to stop, reckless driving and two speeding infractions. If convicted, the man could face fines over $2,000, loss of license and up to six months in jail according to Utah sentencing guidelines.
