Searching for their first win of the region slate, the Carbon Dinos would welcome the Richfield Wildcats to town. Richfield would start fast and not hit the brakes until halftime. But a strong second half from the Dinos wouldn’t be enough as they fell 46-14

Richfield got the scoring started early, opting to kick to open the game, the Wildcats would perform and recover an onside kick. Setting up on Carbon’s 37-yard line, senior running back Gage Yardley would take the opening handoff to the house. A missed extra point gave Richfield an early 6-0 lead.

Forcing a three-and-out, the Wildcats would get back to work quickly, this time scoring through the air when senior quarterback Griffin Wayman delivered a pass to Yardley who dove into the end zone for the touchdown. Richfield would convert on the point after and make it a 13-0 ballgame.

Minutes later the Wildcats would strike again. Again coming from the ground, this time it was senior running back Slate Reitz scoring, coming courtesy of a 19-yard rush where he would weave and wind through the Dino’s defense. However, Richfield missed the kick, giving the Wildcats a 19-0 advantage.

Richfield would score once more in the first quarter when Wayman and Yardley would connect again, this time on a deep shot to the house totaling 69 yards. A successful PAT brought the Wildcat lead to a massive 26-0.

Taking Wayman out of the game, Richfield would put sophomore sensation Cord White in at quarterback. White would waste no time in making his impact felt, rolling out of the pocket and scrambling nine yards for another Wildcat score. A botched extra point held the Richfield lead to 32.

Cord White would strike again, this time connecting with junior receiver David White on a 20-yard dime to the back corner of the end zone. The roller coaster of special teams for Richfield would shoot back up with a complete extra point, giving the Wildcats a 39-0 advantage.

With time winding down in the first half, Richfield was looking to score once more before heading to the locker room. Again, those points would come courtesy of Cord White. Running a fake jet sweep, White would pull the ball and shoot to the inside, breaking off a nine-yard dash to the promised land. Another converted kick would have the Wildcats entering the halftime break with a 46-0 lead.

Following an offense-filled first half, the third quarter would be defined by defense. Neither team would budge, with Carbon putting on a clinic and Richfield maintaining their defensive success from the first half. This would lead to a scoreless quarter and Carbon gaining some momentum heading into the final frame.

That momentum would show five minutes into the fourth quarter, when senior quarterback Stockton Kennedy would roll out to his left to evade pressure, and threw a dot to junior tight end Maddux Wilson, who pulled down a head-tapping catch over a Richfield defender in the corner of the end zone. The golden leg of senior kicker Luke Brady wouldn’t disappoint and the Dinos cut into the Wildcat lead 46-7.

With the clock continuously running, Carbon would have one more chance to score, a chance which they would take full advantage of. Kennedy would receive the snap, take a three-step drop, and lob the ball downfield to senior receiver Austin Jones who broke free along the seam. Making the catch, Jones would race 67 yards to the end zone. Brady would again succeed on the point after to make it 46-14.

Richfield would opt to knee the clock out and the score would hold in favor of the Wildcats.

Kennedy would finish the game with 174 passing yards and two touchdowns. Wilson would end with 24 receiving yards, and a touchdown. Defensively he added a deflected pass.

With the loss, the Dinos move to 3-4 (0-2 region). The Dinos now look to bounce back next week on Friday, Oct. 4, when they welcome the North Sanpete Hawks (2-5, 0-2 region) to Dino stadium. Live play-by-play coverage will be on KRPX 95.3 the Peak starting at 6:30 p.m. with the Landon’s Diesel pregame show and kickoff at 7 p.m.
