The Green River Pirate baseball squad traveled to Snow Canyon High School on Monday in St. George to compete in the second round of the 1A State Championships, after winning on Friday over American Heritage, they advanced to face No. 4 Piute. The contest was competitive but the Thunderbirds took the 5-0- win, ending the Pirates season.
In Friday’s contest with American Heritage, the Pirates used a great pitching performance from Rolando Anguiano who got the complete game win, and offensively Jason Hernandez collected three hits and a run scored in the 4-2 win over the No. 5 team in 1A.
Coming off of a loss just nine days earlier at the hands of Piute, the Pirates knew what to expect from the Thunderbirds, great pitching from junior Brodee Montague, and consistent hitting from their battery of players.
The first inning was a quiet one, while both teams would get runners on base neither team would capitalize taking a 0-0 score into the second. After a scoreless top of the inning for the Pirates, Piute came out and put a pair of runs up and then repeated that in the third to move to 4-0.
Cristian Venzor came up in the top of the fourth for Green River and got on base with a single to right field, but that was as close as the Pirates got to a rally because two batters later the inning ended. Piute would add one more run in the bottom half of the inning. Green River would try to get something going but it never materialized and the Thunderbirds took the 5-0 win.
Venzor and Jason Hernandez each had a hit in the loss for the Pirates.
Anguiano got the start on the mound going 2.1 innings giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits, and struck out one. Hernandez entered the game going 3.2 with one run on five hits and striking out three.
Green River ends the season 5-12 overall and 2-10 in region play. They ended the season in the No. 12 spot in the RPI.
