With almost a semester under their belts, the Students of the Carbon School District continue to chase excellence both in and out of the classroom. One extracurricular activity that always helps in this pursuit is student government. For this week’s Carbon School District update, we sat down with three special guests: eighth grade Vice President Alexander Nickle, sixth grade vice president Sophie Francis and Student Body President Swazi Fryer from Mont Harmon to talk about the school year.

Starting our conversation, we talked to Nickle about the school’s Red Ribbon Week, which he serves on the service board,” we are going to do a lot of stuff for Red Ribbon Week, and we were able to make these little kits that are fun to have … They have little fidgets, gums, sour candy, and this little brochure that they can follow. “ Nickel also discussed the purpose behind these kits,” They’re so we can help with the stress that some students may have.”

Speaking to us next was Francis, who first discussed the change from elementary school to middle school,” It’s been a little challenging because it’s my first time having multiple class periods in a day, and I get a lot more steps in.”

Francis also took the time to speak on Red Ribbon week,” It’s the same for all the grades. There’s going to be activities and dress-up days for all the students to participate in.” When asked what day she was most looking forward to, she shared that it was Friday when students will dress up as their favorite Disney characters. “My favorite Disney character is Cinderella,” stated Francis.

Last but certainly not least, we talked to Fryer, who spoke candidly about the start of the year,” It’s been good, but there’s just been a struggle with kindness and stuff, so we’re trying to fix that, but it’s been good.” Speaking on how the student government is trying to address the kindness issue, Fryer shared,” So me and the student body vice president have been working hard on making this video that the student government’s going to do to just show the school to promote kindness and how we need to be nicer to everyone.”

Closing out our conversation, we asked Fryer to talk about what her favorite part of the video production process she has enjoyed most, to which she replied,” It was really fun when the student body vice president and I got to teach the class and have them do their part. Because it was cool to be in charge of the class, it was just really fun to see everyone practicing their parts.”
