One aspect of the Castle Country Area is its storied history in the Old West. Tales of sheriffs, outlaws and robbers have been passed from generation to generation, providing all with a special piece of history. In Green River, this heritage is celebrated through Outlaw Days, which this year will be held on Friday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 2. To learn more about what attendees should expect, Castle Country Radio was joined by Doc Nelson to talk gunslinging, action and the Wild West.
Outlaw Days take the form of a Cowboy Action Match, which Nelson explained more in-depth,” a cowboy action match is using replica firearms from the Old West, and we shoot at targets in a speed competition … we’re shooting live ammunition at steel targets, and it’s a timed event, so the winners are determined by time. We follow the Single Action Shooter Society rules, and that’s a worldwide organization.”
Nelson then explained what the rules set aside by the Single Action Shooter Society mean for competitors,” what happens at a match is you divide up into a group of people called a posse, and you will shoot several stages, and the stage involves two pistols, a lever-action rifle, and a shotgun. So you’ll be shooting 24 rounds to 26 rounds at each stage, and the posse will move through that stage, and the times will be recorded that way, and of course, the quickest time wins”
In a news release for Outlaw Days, it is explained,” A stage consists of a “story,” a procedure for shooting the target arrays. All stages this year are based around Outlaw Flat Nose George. A missed target is a 5-second time penalty and shooting in the wrong order is a 10-second penalty. There are also minor and major safety penalties.”
Nelson discussed that although there will be experienced shooters at Outlaw Days, that it will also be a chance for newcomers to try their hand at the sport. “It’s a for-fun match, so there’s not a lot of awards that we’re going to hand out or anything. There’ll be more costume awards than shooting awards, but it’s a relaxed event … If you’re interested, come and see. We can probably figure out a way to give you a taste of it.”
In addition to this, Outlaw Days will feature a BBQ dinner and a concert by country artist Brenn Hill. Participants are encouraged to register at outlawdays.com by Oct. 26 to ensure a plate at the BBQ Dinner. Attendees do not need to be shooters to participate in the dinner and concert.
Closing out our conversation, Nelson shared,” It’s a great event, particularly the dinner and live entertainment. That’s all pretty reasonably priced. Shooters get the whole package for $50, and it’s broken down so you can purchase just what you want.”
